Monte The Show Until……
BCM posted Tuesday March 30, 2010.
For Luch Monte and the Monte Motorsports team things looked to have turned the corner last Saturday night at Bunbury Speedway until outside influences changed the night completely.
Monte and the Miracle Recreation Equipment #17 J&J have been having an up and down season, no one can deny that. But from the start of the evening last Saturday night everything seemed to have fallen in to place – the ‘planets were aligned’ so to speak.
He started the night out with a 13.720, just over point three of a second slower than the fastest time trailer and good enough for eighth position in the field. It was a respectable result and with the Bunbury surface looking the best it has all season the entire Monte Motorsport team were confident of a good showing during the qualifying heats.
Monte showed just how skillful he can be behind the wheel of an 800plus horsepower Sprintcar with two brilliant drives to take out two wins in the heats. He ran high and low to make the necessary moves to hit the lead and never came under pressure during those two heats once out in front. These two wins earned him enough points to be highest points scorer heading in to the evening dashes.
And this is where the evening started to come undone!
With Monte starting on pole of Dash A, the original start was waved off by the officials as the warned both Monte and fellow front row starter Ben Ellement. With the stewards deciding Monte jumped and sending him rear of the field. Many of the fans in the stands were left shaking their heads in disbelief in the decision but Monte was even more bewildered. He finished the dash in fifth and now had an uphill battle in the final.
“I can’t believe it” he said shaking his head in the pits after the dash “We finally have a good run, the car was great in the heats and then it gets taken away from me like that.”
Still clearly disappointed he went in to the A-Main positive he could move forward and that’s just what he did. He had a titanic battle for six, seventh and eighth for a number of laps until he hit lapped traffic, which for a change proved to be his friend. From there he continued to improve and even though he looked to be one of the fastest cars on track he couldn’t catch the leaders and had to settle for fifth at the end of the night.
Many people expected Monte to have a breakout year this season, but unfortunately it hasn’t eventuated. Just as he did Saturday night, he has shown that he is still fast enough he just needs that bit of luck to fall his way and with still a couple of meetings to go Luch would love nothing more than to grab another elusive AHG Series feature win here on the west coast.
